Districts Building Educator Housing to Retain Teachers

With a national teacher shortage and rapidly rising rents, Jefferson Union High School District in San Mateo County’s Daly City is one of a few places in the country with educator housing. It is a potential solution to attract and retain educators by creating affordable housing in the communities in which they work. Benefits include shorter commute times, the opportunity to save money, and most importantly providing them with the opportunity to get to know students and their families better.
 
However, these types of projects face obstacles. Some of which include pushback from residents and for people to think outside the box.
