Schools — especially those in rural and urban communities — are crumbling, and school officials describe the situation as dire. More than a year ago, Virginia Sen. Bill Stanley began leading an effort to do something about it. It didn’t go far, and not many lawmakers rallied behind him.
Stanley and a few other legislators toured schools more than a year ago to get a sense of the school conditions across Virginia. His package of school construction bills this year includes putting on the November ballot asks Virginians whether they want to issue $3 billion in GO bonds to go toward constructing or upgrading K-12 schools, creating a fund used to repair or replace roofs, and requiring the State Board of Education to establish minimum standards for what a modern public school building should be.
