It’s been 15 years since Highland had a Kmart on Highland Avenue. But if all goes well, this fall, the site will again be bustling, this time, with students. Real Journey Academies has been interested in the site of the former Kmart for years, but it wasn’t available until recently. The roughly 150,000-square-foot facility will have separate entrances and classrooms for the middle and high schools, but share a cafeteria, gymnasium and theater.
The high school will share space with New Vision Middle School, which has operated in the city since 2008, and will be moving from its Pacific Street campus when the new Highland Avenue facility opens. Both schools are chartered through San Bernardino City Unified.
