Pasadena Unified panel recommends closing 5 schools, but pushes ‘creative ideas’ before final decision

Parents and teachers flooded a special school-board meeting in Pasadena on Thursday, where a district committee officially recommended the closure of up to five schools for the 2019-20 school year. The meeting came three weeks after many of those same community members showed up in the same board room to speak about the issue, which had not yet come to the board – and some school board members said they were unaware of.

The committee’s recommendation included five potential school closures and noted that “any one of the recommendations can be taken a-la-carte, or all them can be taken together.” The district is in the midst of a budget crisis and assembled the committee to find ways to save money. PUSD has already identified $14.3 million in possible cuts for the 2018-19 school year. The Los Angeles County Office of Education is keeping an eye on the district’s finances to ensure its solvency.
