California Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond was recently elected to his second 4-year term. During the past year, he created a task force on early literacy and secured funding through the Legislature for $20,000 scholarships for those pursuing careers in counseling who are willing to commit to two years of working in schools of high need. Thurmond also obtained money for anti-bias efforts in schools and created a plan to obtain more Medi-Cal funding to expand mental health care for students.
